MODELING

MANUFACTURING

Allow us to introduce to you the manufacturing process behind the stylish bronze dumbbell, KEN.

Design of the Mold

To facilitate the uniform flow of copper through the mold, a pattern in the same shape as the product and a gate are placed within it in accordance with the flow design.

Pouring

The pouring process requires the skill of a true artisan—the blistering molten copper is taken from the melting furnace and poured precisely into the sand mold where it solidifies while being cooled.

As Cast

“As cast” is the term used to describe castings which are removed from the sand molds after being trimmed of unnecessary material and before further processing.

Polishing and Buffing

Buffing is an advanced form of polishing which improves the smoothness of the copper and imparts a mirrorlike finish.

CHARACTERISTICS
OF BRONZE

KEN was conjured up from the idea of deforming an ancient scroll, one that dates back perhaps to the Nara period. It was given a twist. The moment of that twist represents the fusion of the ancient and the contemporary. The delicate, curved lines in the twisted area reflect rays of light in such a way that they resemble a rippling, woven fabric, as if space and time were distorted. This is fascinating for the beholder.
Copper, the main component of bronze, reacts with moisture. When that happens, the exceptionally powerful reactive oxidative species, hydroxyl radical, which forms on the surface, quickly annihilates all forms of bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms. According to research done by a team at the US National Institute of Health, even the currently widespread Coronavirus is destroyed within 4 hours.

Product Usage and Maintenance

The surface of the material from which these dumbbells are made is rather easily scratched or dented through ordinary use. Over time, the material may also be subject to discoloration and darkening, but the fundamental mechanism by which the copper ions are emitted is not of concern. When stored over long periods in humid areas, a greenish patina may form, but according to research done by Japanʼ s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, it is harmless.
We recommend that you periodically apply a small amount of copper/metal polish to your dumbbell with a suitable cloth to maintain its original luster. You will be able to keep your dumbbell as lustrous as it was when you acquired it.
